My 21st Birthday

Was this past Monday, the 18th, and was so momentous they gave me the day off from school and work. At least that's what people told me.

So, two out of three is not bad in my book (anyone care to guess which two?) But the day was definitely made that much better by a good friend's presence and going to see The Princess and the Frog.

I had thought about just letting go that Martin Luther King Jr. Day was on my birthday, I mean, there are enough people celebrating it enough already, right? Well, I took the time to sit and watch/listen to the entire speech. And it's powerful stuff. To tell the truth, it was the first time I had listened to the whole thing. I recommend you do it, if you never have.

Switching gears. Yes, I had myself some alcohol. Yes it was my first time. No, I actually didn't really enjoy it. I plan on trying some again. Maybe a Lemon Drop and a Rum & Coke wasn't the best place to start? I am open to your suggestions. Seriously. I have no idea what I am doing around a drink menu.

And that, was that.

For My Birthday

For my birthday, I don't want a party, I don't have a specific gift that will make the day.

I think all I want is

To have a taste of some alcoholic beverage that I buy and am carded for.

To drink an entire bottle of Welch's Sparkling Grape Juice.

And to give someone a kiss.*

*as someone will most likely disrupt the honesty of this post by calling into question the gender neutral term "someone," I assure you my desire is for a female recipient.

So This Is The New Year

And here's to new begginnings.

"So this is the new year
And I have no resolutions
For self-assigned penance
For problems with easy solutions

11:11 PM 11/11

What did you wish for (if you don't mind sharing)?

What did you do about it?

Did anything happen?

11:11 AM 11/11

Make a wish, say a prayer, hope. Then go do something about it.

Make A Wish

Tomorrow is the eleventh of November, a date that is relatively unremarkable aside from the noticeable number of '1's in its denotation: 11/11.

There is a well known social inclination, you could say, to tell someone to make a wish when the clock is at the time 11:11, AM or PM, supposedly because that time has semi-magical abilities to grant the wish. One would logically assume, then, that on the date 11/11, the magical powers possessed by the time 11:11 would be magnified exponentially.

While I personally employ the excuse of magic for many inexplicable things, I think people use it as a crutch when a fine and even better tool is simply action.

That is why tomorrow, 11/11, at 11:11 AM, I am going to post, challenging you, all 4 of my readers, to make a wish and then do something about it.

That's right, hope in the prospect of whatever you wished for, but then do something to make it happen. Talk to that person, write them a letter, take a picture, fill out that application, pray, read, write--whatever needs to be done to push your life in the direction you just wished it would go.

It doesn't have to be big, it doesn't have to be impossible. Just hope, and then act.

Of Weddings

This weekend I'm going to a wedding of two dear friends, which I am absolutely stoked about. I really do love weddings, in a woman sort of way. That is, I highly anticipate witnessing two people pledge themselves in covenantal selfless love for each other. I can really can dig it to the max. I'm mixing my slang terms now, aren't I?

I first realized my love for weddings December of '07 when my friends Ashley and Petey got married and I legitimately man-cried1 when they were pronounced man and wife. Last semester's series at RUF was another boost in my inclination for weddings, as Jeff repeatedly spoke of selfless, covenantal love, of which the Father's love for us and Christ's marriage to the church is the prime example.

I find myself yearning for the example to demonstrate that type of selfless, covenantal love2 to a specific female recipient, that is, my wife. That, and the speaker at RUF's summer conference talking about looking for PWs3 simply feeds the flame for that desire.

To myself, I would reply with two things: One, how can someone who so often and easily flirts around like it's going out of style even consider himself close to ready for marriage? Two, why can you not demonstrate selfless, covenantal love to all those around you, especially your Christian sisters?

Dang, I'm a tough person to argue with.

1 This consists of the appearance of tears only slightly visible and the pressing of the fist to the lips to mask any hint of emotion.

2 How many daggum times am I going to use that phrase in this post!?! I guess the answer is four.

3 Potential Wives, for those of you that don't know the good ole Christian slang. Actually the speaker was the first one I had ever heard use it.

The Fellowship of the Unashamed

The following letter was written by a young pastor in Zimbabwe who was later martyred for his faith, taken from the book The Signature of Jesus by Brennan Manning:

I'm part of the fellowship of the unashamed. I have the Holy Spirit power. The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made--I'm a disciple of his. I won't look back, let up, slow down, back away, or be still. My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, my future is secure. I'm finished and done with love living, sight walking, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, worldly talking, cheap giving and dwarfed goals.

I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudits, or popularity. I don't have to be right, first tops, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded. I now live by faith, lean on his presence, walk by patience, am uplifted by prayer, and labor with power.

My face is set, my gait is fast, my goal is heaven, my road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions are few, my Guide is reliable, my mission is clear. I cannot be bough, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded, or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of the enemy, pander at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity.

I won't give up, shut up, or let up until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid up, preached up for the cause of Christ. I am a disciple of Jesus. I must keep going until he comes, give until I drop, preach until all know, and work until he stops me. And, when he comes for his own, he will have no problem recognizing me. My banner will be clear.

The Love of My Life

I went to see a dance performance tonight, not normally my cup of tea, but it was amazing. As a poet, I highly appreciated the artistry and metaphor and symbolism it contained. Quite amazing.

Now, as result of noticing the above qualities, and the simple fact that I look for and normally find metaphor and poetry in just about everything, I came to the conclusion that the love of my life, or just about anyone I was to love romantically for a long period of time, would have to be able to do something similar.

Either she would need to be able to recognize it herself, just like I do, or she would have to at least genuinely appreciate it whenever I got excited about it. I find myself often, repeatedly, perpetually echoing the desire of the speaker in The Postal Service's song "Clark Gable":

"I want so badly to believe that 'there is truth, that love is real,' and I want life in every word to the extent that it's absurd."

That is literally what I want. Life in every word. And some people may think it's absurd. But I don't. And I think that the love of my life will have to be the same way.

Now, I am by no means trying to "limit God's choice" or any such nonsense. For all I know, God may have someone picked out for me who hates literature/poetry/art. I'm just saying that the likelihood of that being the case is not very grand in my mind.

Mayhaps she will not agree, per sé, or she will not do it herself, but I feel as though she would at least have to appreciate the quality in myself and be willing to listen and celebrate it whenever I have a poetic outburst.
